Forward deployed engineer salary in India at a glance
Public salary data for FDEs in India is still thin, because the title is new and most aggregators hold fewer than a hundred submissions. Read the table as a set of independent snapshots, each with its own sample size and date, and expect individual offers to vary widely by employer type.
| Glassdoor India | Average total pay ₹14,56,250; base range ₹9 lakh to ₹18 lakh; additional pay about ₹2 lakh | 50 salaries, latest submissions October 2026 | Levels.fyi India | Median total compensation ₹17,57,251; 25th percentile ₹16,04,026; 75th percentile ₹41,93,205; 90th percentile ₹46,32,899 | 11 data points, updated 21 October 2026 | Salary.com India | Average ₹14,07,380; typical range ₹11,29,889 to ₹16,53,596 | Last updated April 2025 | TeamLease Digital, via AIM | Entry level ₹18 lakh to ₹25 lakh; senior roles ₹85 lakh or more | Staffing-firm estimate, July 2026 |
The gap between the 25th and 75th percentiles on Levels.fyi shows how split the Indian market is. Services firms and GCCs that are retraining existing engineers into FDE roles tend to pay close to their standard software bands, while AI-first startups and global product companies hiring in Bengaluru and Hyderabad pay a clear premium. Individual Glassdoor submissions from October 2026 show engineers with one to three years of experience reporting anything from ₹7 lakh in Pune to ₹60 lakh to ₹70 lakh in Hyderabad.
FDE salary in India by experience level
No single source publishes reliable level-by-level FDE pay for India yet, so the table below combines the sources above and labels where each figure comes from. Treat the ranges as orientation for a negotiation, and check current postings before you anchor on a number.
| Entry / associate FDE | 0 to 3 years | ₹12 lakh to ₹25 lakh | Salary.com entry level ₹12,83,131; TeamLease Digital entry band ₹18 lakh to ₹25 lakh | FDE | 3 to 6 years | ₹16 lakh to ₹42 lakh | Levels.fyi 25th to 75th percentile | Senior FDE | 6 years and above | ₹42 lakh to ₹85 lakh and above | Levels.fyi 75th to 90th percentile; TeamLease Digital senior band |
AIM's reporting on Indeed data adds a useful caveat. Glassdoor's January 2026 update put average FDE base pay at about ₹12 lakh from 28 submissions, and Indeed said its own sample was too small for a reliable median (AIM, October 2026). Averages will move quickly as more engineers report pay under this title.
Forward deployed engineer salary in the US
US pay is higher and better documented, and a growing number of employers now publish ranges in their job posts. The aggregator figures and posted ranges below are all annual.
| Glassdoor US | Forward Deployed Engineer, all US | Average $156,547; total pay range $125K to $199K; base $94K to $141K | Levels.fyi US | Forward Deployed Engineer, all US | Median $220,000; 25th percentile $172K; 75th percentile $300K; 90th percentile $362K | OpenAI job post | Forward Deployed Software Engineer, New York City | $153K to $325K plus equity | OpenAI job post | Manager, Forward Deployed Engineering, San Francisco | $280K to $335K plus equity | Palantir job post | Forward Deployed Software Engineer, US Government, Fayetteville NC | $135,000 to $200,000 |
Read by level, the US picture is roughly as follows. Early-career and government-facing FDE roles cluster around the Glassdoor range and the Palantir posting, mid-level engineers at well-funded AI companies sit near the Levels.fyi median of $220,000, and senior engineers and managers at frontier labs reach $300,000 to $360,000 before equity. AIM's reporting cites some hyperscalers, AI labs and product companies paying $300,000 to $600,000 in North America (AIM, July 2026).
Europe follows the same pattern at the top end. A now-closed Anthropic FDE posting in Munich listed €205,000 to €220,000 a year and asked for four or more years in a technical, customer-facing role (Anthropic via General Catalyst job board).
Which companies hire forward deployed engineers
FDE hiring now spans three groups of employers, and pay differs sharply between them. Knowing which group you are applying to helps you set realistic expectations before the first call.
Demand is rising quickly from a small base. Indeed data reported by AIM shows FDE postings in India grew nearly 19 times between June 2025 and June 2026, with roles concentrated in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai and remote (AIM). Microsoft's $2.5 billion "Frontier Company" unit, staffed by 6,000 engineers, adds further competition for the same talent (AIM).
Skills that move FDE pay
FDE pay rewards engineers who can ship inside a customer's environment and stay accountable after go-live. Job posts and AIM's interviews with hiring firms point to the same handful of skills that separate the top of the range from the middle.
Language can also be a pay lever for overseas roles. The Munich posting required native or C1 German, which narrows the field and supports a higher band.
Forward deployed engineer career path
Most FDEs arrive from an adjacent engineering role, and the career path branches in several directions once you have a few deployments behind you. The common entry routes are listed below, followed by the usual progression.
Entry routes into FDE roles
How FDEs progress
- Associate or junior FDE. Works under a senior FDE on one customer, owns integrations and debugging, and learns to write scoping documents.
- FDE. Owns a deployment end to end, from discovery through production and handover, often with 25% to 50% travel in roles such as the Anthropic posting.
- Senior or lead FDE. Runs several accounts, designs reusable deployment patterns and feeds product requirements back to engineering.
- Manager or head of forward deployed engineering. Leads the field team, sets staffing models and owns delivery outcomes, as described in OpenAI's manager posting.
From the senior FDE level, engineers commonly move sideways into solutions architecture, product management for platform or enterprise products, AI engineering leadership, or founding a startup in the vertical they know best. The breadth of customer exposure is the main reason the role is valued as a career accelerator.
How CFDE, CFDE Pro and CFDAS fit
Shipped work carries the most weight in an FDE interview, and a credential adds a structured curriculum and a verifiable signal while you build that portfolio. ADaSci offers three FDE credentials, each with a self-paced course and a proctored online exam. Current pricing is shown on each credential page.
| CFDE | 30 hours self-paced; 60-question, one-hour proctored exam; lifetime validity | Engineers moving into FDE work who want coverage of agentic frameworks, cloud-native deployment, security and customer-centric solution design | CFDE Pro | Four-week live incubator with 8 hours of live masterclasses, four code-reviewed shipped projects and the CFDE exam | Candidates who need portfolio projects (a CI/CD pipeline, a multi-agent system, a monitored RAG service and an enterprise capstone) to discuss in interviews | CFDAS | 60 hours combining the CFDE and CAASA curricula; 120-question, two-hour proctored exam | Senior engineers aiming at lead FDE or architect roles that need agentic system design depth |
