The os module is used for environment variable management, while openai, pandas, and IPython.display are imported for interacting with the OpenAI API, handling data frames, and displaying HTML content, respectively. The mlflow library and its related modules are imported to manage the machine learning lifecycle. 

Defining the Experiment

We define our experiment, “SMS Response Evaluator,” and specify the message format for GPT-4 to evaluate SMS responses. Here is the code snippet.

We then define a list of messages that will be used to prompt GPT-4. Each message asks GPT-4 to evaluate whether an SMS response is appropriate, checking for potentially harmful tones and suggesting corrections if necessary. The message structure specifies the role as “user” and includes instructions for GPT-4.

Logging the Model with MLflow

We use MLflow to log the GPT-4 model, specifying the task, artifact path, and input-output schema.

Within an MLflow run context (mlflow.start_run()), we log the GPT-4 model using mlflow.openai.log_model. This function records the model configuration and its parameters, making it reproducible and trackable within MLflow. The model=”gpt-4″ specifies the model type and task=openai.chat.completions indicate the specific task the model will perform. The artifact_path=”model” parameter sets the storage location for the model artifacts. The messages parameter contains the list of instructions defined earlier. The ModelSignature defines the schema for inputs and outputs, as well as parameters like max_tokens and temperature, ensuring consistency in model execution.

Loading the Model

After logging the model, we load it for predictions.

This line loads the previously logged model from MLflow using mlflow.pyfunc.load_model. The model_info.model_uri contains the unique identifier for the model stored in MLflow, allowing us to retrieve and use the model in subsequent steps. The load_model function transforms the saved model into a format that can be used for predictions, making it easy to integrate into workflows.

Validating SMS Responses

We prepare a set of SMS responses to be evaluated by the model. These responses vary in tone and content to challenge GPT-4’s evaluative capabilities.

In this final block, we create a DataFrame using pandas to hold the SMS responses we want to validate. Each entry in the “text” column represents a different message. The model.predict function is used to generate predictions for these messages, with parameters max_tokens set to 50 and temperature set to 0.2, which control the length and creativity of the responses, respectively.

The responses from the model are formatted into HTML using list comprehension and the join method to ensure each response is displayed as a distinct paragraph. Finally, display(HTML(formatted_output)) renders the HTML content, showing the evaluated and possibly corrected SMS responses.
